Held at Ashiya City General Park, the event marked an exciting milestone for the growing international school community and reflected the school’s commitment to holistic education, student wellbeing and character development.
As an international school with a Japanese heart, NLCS Kobe’s Sports Day combined the energy and excitement of athletic competition with the values deeply rooted in Japanese school culture, including unity, perseverance, respect and collective effort. The event created an inspiring atmosphere where students of all ages were encouraged to challenge themselves, support one another and celebrate participation.

A Memorable First Sports Day for the NLCS Kobe Community
The day began at 10:00am with opening remarks from Founding Principal Mr Matthew Williams, who warmly welcomed students, families and staff before reminding everyone that Sports Day is about far more than winning. Throughout the event, the focus remained on participation, teamwork, sportsmanship and personal growth, values that sit at the heart of an NLCS Kobe education.
Students from Pre Grade 1 to Grade 6 proudly competed in their four school houses: Ishizuchi, Yotei, Sakurajima and Tateyama. Named after some of Japan’s most iconic mountains and natural landmarks, the house system encouraged collaboration across year groups while fostering a strong sense of belonging, school pride and community spirit.

Multi Skill Activities Encouraging Teamwork and Confidence
Throughout the morning, students participated in a variety of multi skill activities organised in a carousel format. Designed to develop agility, coordination, confidence and teamwork, the activities provided a fun and inclusive environment where every child could actively participate and enjoy success.
Activities included obstacle course races, Egg and Spoon Relay races, Frisbee Target Throw, Bean Bag Toss, Standing Long Jump and Water Relay races. Each activity encouraged students to challenge themselves while supporting their teammates and demonstrating resilience and determination.
A dedicated Rest Station also ensured students remained hydrated and comfortable throughout the day, reflecting the school’s strong emphasis on student wellbeing and pastoral care.

Track Events Showcase Teamwork, Determination and School Spirit
Students also took part in a series of exciting track events throughout the day, enthusiastically supported by parents, staff and fellow classmates. The atmosphere around the track was filled with energy and encouragement as students proudly represented their houses in both individual and team competitions.
Relay races were among the highlights of the event, with students working together to earn valuable points for Ishizuchi, Yotei, Sakurajima and Tateyama. These races showcased not only speed and athletic ability, but also teamwork, resilience and outstanding sportsmanship as students encouraged one another from start to finish.
Students also participated in a range of sprint and longer distance running events, demonstrating perseverance, determination and house pride throughout the competition. The track events reflected the strong sense of community at NLCS Kobe, where participation, encouragement and collective achievement were celebrated by all.
Unfortunately, due to rain arriving later in the afternoon, the planned parent and staff activities were unable to proceed as scheduled. Despite the weather interruption, the enthusiasm and positive spirit of the day remained strong, with families, students and staff coming together to celebrate the success of NLCS Kobe’s first ever Sports Day.
