The Senior School curriculum reflects the rich academic heritage of the North London Collegiate School family. Delivered primarily in English, whilst maintaining a strong commitment to Japanese language and culture, it combines academic rigour with intellectual curiosity, encouraging students to think independently, question confidently and engage deeply with the world around them. Subject knowledge is taught within a rich conceptual framework, enabling students to make connections across disciplines, apply their learning in unfamiliar contexts and develop the confidence to tackle increasingly complex ideas. Throughout the curriculum, students are stretched and challenged to achieve their very best, preparing them to flourish at the world’s leading universities and beyond.
At the heart of the curriculum is an ambitious English programme that introduces students to an exceptional range of literature. Through texts such as Michael Morpurgo’s Kensuke’s Kingdom, Louis Sachar’s Holes, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Orwell’s Animal Farm and Tolkien’s The Hobbit, students explore enduring questions of identity, justice, power and responsibility. Poetry, speeches and carefully selected non-fiction broaden these perspectives still further, exposing students to diverse voices, cultures and historical contexts. Through close reading, lively discussion and extended writing, students develop sophisticated comprehension, analytical thinking and articulate communication, establishing foundations for success across every area of learning.

Mathematics and the Sciences are aligned with the highest British curricular standards, providing a challenging and coherent foundation across Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students are encouraged to think logically, solve unfamiliar problems and apply their understanding with precision, whether constructing mathematical proofs, designing scientific investigations or interpreting experimental evidence. Practical enquiry sits alongside conceptual understanding, fostering curiosity alongside accuracy and resilience. This culture of stretch and challenge enables students to excel in prestigious competitions such as the Junior Mathematical Challenge, where more than half of our MYP students have achieved an award.

Individuals and Societies brings together the strengths of both British and Japanese approaches to History and Geography. Through the chronological study of British and Japanese history, students develop an understanding of how societies evolve, how interpretations change over time and how evidence shapes historical understanding. Geography explores themes such as globalisation, tectonics, rivers, demographics, migration and the relationship between human, physical and environmental systems, encouraging students to examine the complex interactions that shape our world. Across the subject, students learn to analyse evidence critically, appreciate multiple perspectives and construct well-reasoned arguments, equipping them with the knowledge and insight to engage thoughtfully with contemporary global challenges.

Creativity flourishes through an innovative Arts and Design programme encompassing subjects such as Music, Drama, Visual Arts and Design. Students do far more than develop technical proficiency. They explore the cultural, historical and social contexts that shape artistic expression, examining, for example, the socio-economic origins of Blues music alongside practical performance and composition. Working across both physical and digital media, they experiment, collaborate and refine original ideas, learning that creativity is rooted not only in imagination but also in curiosity, reflection and thoughtful iteration.

Physical Education develops far more than sporting ability. Through a broad programme of physical activity, students build technical competence across sports such as badminton while using video analysis to reflect upon and refine their performance. By setting ambitious goals, evaluating their own progress and responding positively to challenge, they develop resilience, self-awareness and leadership. Metacognition is embedded throughout the programme, helping students understand how disciplined practice, perseverance and reflective learning lead to sustained improvement both on and off the field.

Japanese language and literature remain an integral part of the programme, ensuring students continue to strengthen their bilingual proficiency while maintaining a meaningful connection to Japanese language, culture and heritage. This bilingual environment enables students to move confidently between languages and cultures, developing the adaptability and intercultural understanding that are increasingly valuable in a global society.

Across every subject, the highest expectations are matched by expert teaching and exceptional pastoral support. Students encounter purposeful challenge, are encouraged to think independently and are inspired to pursue excellence in all that they do. They will leave the Senior School not only with outstanding academic foundations, but also with the intellectual confidence, creativity and resilience to solve unfamiliar problems, contribute thoughtfully to society and continue learning throughout their lives.

Pastoral care is a central pillar of an NLCS education and students will be supported through a caring and structured system that nurtures their well-being, confidence and personal growth. Through form tutors, specialist staff and a culture that promotes empathy and respect, students will build and retain the emotional and social skills they need to thrive both in school and in life on a global stage.
